New app helps prevent avalanche deaths

In todays tech savvy world, several apps exist for the backcountry enthusiast, some help to record your trips, others help to capture images and cache them into Google Earth while still others help to navigate with compasses, mapping tools, inclinometers and more.  But the new Parks Canada Avalanche bulletin App does more than all that, it’s designed to feed information to the backcountry enthusiast about the avalanche risks they are about to encounter while traveling and recreating in the backcountry.

/Users/dougwash/Desktop/1-cc35375dae.jpgVisually dynamic, the app relies less on text based reporting and incorporates a series of easily identifiable icons that relate to elevation, aspect, danger rating, type of problems in the snowpack and more.  Avalanche apps and bulletins do little to save lives in and of themselves, the onus is still placed on the casual observer of this information to “get informed and go outdoors” as the AdventureSmart Program suggests, but to see this app and for the full story, Read More......
