BCSF and McBride Snowmobile Association Unite to Address Renshaw Area Closure

The sudden closure of a crucial bridge in the renowned Renshaw snowmobile area near McBride, BC has severed access for the snowmobiling community, sparking concerns for recreational enthusiasts and the economic vitality of the region.

The volunteer-driven snowmobile club was informed of a decision by the Ministry to zero-rate the critical bridge in late-January, deeming it structurally insufficient. This rating bars snowmobile traffic and trail maintenance equipment from using the bridge, and subsequently, accessing the backcountry terrain beyond.

This closure disrupts not only recreational activities but also poses a significant economic threat to McBride. With the primary snowmobile area now inaccessible, businesses reliant on snowmobiling tourism are anticipated to suffer, potentially resulting in job losses and decreased town revenue. Already, the Village of McBride has reported a 70% decrease in traffic since the trail closure on January 22, 2024.

In response, the BC Snowmobile Federation (BCSF) has dispatched a letter urging the Minister of Forests to prioritize immediate action. The letter also calls for the development of a comprehensive plan for maintaining Forest Service Roads and critical bridges essential for public recreation access across the province. Both the BCSF and the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC advocated for this during the BC Select Standing Committee on Finance's budget consultation this year, requesting an annual government allocation of at least $2 million for road infrastructure supporting access to parks, recreation sites, and trails in the province (read more HERE and HERE).

The collaborative efforts of the BCSF and the McBride Snowmobile Association are dedicated to finding a resolution for the urgent Renshaw Snowmobile Area closure. The objective is not only to preserve a winter recreational site but also to safeguard the economic well-being of McBride and similar communities throughout British Columbia.

Stay tuned for updates as the BCSF actively works towards a resolution and advocates for the needs of the snowmobiling community.
