get kids involved in snowmobiling

Snowmobiling isn’t just for grown-ups. Whether your child is just starting out or already riding with you regularly, there are so many fun, safe, and meaningful ways to get them involved in the sport. From family trail rides to youth volunteering, snowmobiling can spark a lifelong love of winter adventure and responsibility.

READY SET RIDE! is the BC Snowmobile Federation’s youth program, designed to help kids ride smart, stay safe, and respect the backcountry—all while having fun.

Leading the way is Jax the Whiskey Jack—our cheeky, clever Canada Jay mascot. With his cozy toque and backpack full of essentials, Jax shares big wisdom for small riders, dropping in with tips, reminders, and trail smarts wherever adventure calls.

From activity books to safety challenges, READY SET RIDE! makes it easy for families to explore snowmobiling together.

For Parents: Start the Conversation Early

Some of the best family memories are made on snowmobiles, but backcountry adventures come with responsibility. It’s never too early to help your kids build the skills, habits, and confidence they need to stay safe out there.

  • Kids can’t assess avalanche danger, but they can learn to recognize trail signs, pack their gear, and follow basic safety rules. Scale your trips to match their maturity, stamina, and attention span.

  • Let them help pack snacks, check the weather, and talk about where you’re going. This builds awareness and confidence — and makes safety feel like part of the fun.

  • Show your child how to ride responsibly, respect closures, wear proper gear, and treat others with kindness — both on the trail and online.

  • Use their natural curiosity to your advantage. "What are these animal tracks?" or "Why do we carry a shovel?" are perfect teachable moments that build lifelong awareness.
