The BC Snowmobile Federation (BCSF) is aware of concerns from riders and members of the outdoor recreation community regarding a proposed tourism development north of Revelstoke near Mars Creek on Lake Revelstoke.
The proposal involves an application to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) to amend the Official Community Plan and rezone a property located at 2636 Highway 23 North to allow for a year-round backcountry tourism resort development. Planning materials indicate the project could include guest accommodations, staff housing, and associated infrastructure associated with backcountry tourism operations.
Because the terrain north of Revelstoke has long been used for snowmobiling and other forms of backcountry recreation, we understand that many riders and community members have questions about what this proposal could mean for access and future use of the surrounding area. The proposal includes approximately 160 acres of private land to be re-zoned and does not affect the existing heli ski tenure however there are some concerns about access and increased use in this backcountry area.
The BC Snowmobile Federation has reached out directly to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District planning department to better understand where the proposal sits within the regional planning process.
At this time, we have been advised that the application is scheduled to be considered by the CSRD Board on March 19, 2026, where the Board will determine whether to grant second reading to the proposed bylaws and proceed to a public hearing.
It is important for riders to understand that the project has not been approved, and the planning process is still in its early stages.
We have also been advised that public submissions are not currently being accepted as part of the board consideration package. If the Board proceeds to a public hearing, the CSRD will announce how and when comments can be submitted for consideration.
The BC Snowmobile Federation is actively monitoring this file and working closely with our local member club, the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club, to better understand the potential implications for snowmobiling access and backcountry recreation in the region. We will provide an update when submissions are ready to be received by the CSRD board.
Part of the Federation’s role is to represent the interests of riders and snowmobile clubs when land-use and access issues arise. We will continue to engage with relevant parties and share updates with the snowmobiling community as more information becomes available.
