ORV Trail Fund Powers Key BCSF Projects in 2025

The BC Snowmobile Federation is proud to announce that we’ve been awarded $25,000 from the 2025 Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Trail Fund to support a series of high-impact provincial initiatives that directly benefit riders, clubs, and the broader backcountry community.

This year’s ORV Trail Fund investment supports a series of integrated projects that strengthen the foundation of the BCSF’s provincial stewardship program.

$10,000 for BC Provincial Snowmobile Trail Map Enhancements

A key pillar of the BCSF’s stewardship program is the BC Provincial Snowmobile Trail Map - a powerful digital tool accessed by over 17,000 users each season and now considered essential for safe, informed, and responsible riding in BC.

Developed in partnership with the Federation’s LetsRideBC tourism marketing program, the map consolidates over 100 complex data layers into a single, intuitive platform. Riders use it for trip planning and as a compliance tool to navigate closures and permit zones. Behind the scenes, it also supports BCSF staff, member clubs, and government agencies in cataloguing and managing over 18,000 km of trails and other snowmobile infrastructure across the province.

The map is live-synced with club-provided trail data and government closure polygons - including the Adaptive Management and Access Program’s roving caribou closures, which open and close terrain based on collar data. Last season, we also integrated Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) layers in collaboration with Avalanche Canada.

Currently available on desktop and in-dash displays via BRP GO, Polaris Ride Command, and Garmin, the next chapter is just around the corner.

With support from the 2025 ORV Trail Fund, we’re:

  • Streamlining data layers for improved performance

  • Adding BC Parks polygons to clarify when and where snowmobiling is permitted in authorized BC Parks.

  • Finalizing the long-awaited mobile app launch - coming winter 2025 which will allow users without in-dash displays to access this data on the go!

$10,000 for Stewardship Guide and Program Support

The funding will also support a long-overdue update to our original BCSF Environmental Stewardship Guide first released in 2008. This updated guide will serve as a foundational resource for our member clubs and partners, featuring modern best practices, tools, and real-world success stories from across the province.

In addition, the grant will help us enhance our “Respect Where You Ride”  program with refreshed, engaging, and ready-to-use resources that support broad snowmobile stewardship efforts throughout BC.

$5,000 for Wildlife Closure Education

Finally, $5,000 has been allocated to develop wildlife closure education materials that help clubs share important stewardship messages in a clear, consistent, and recognizable way. With varying regional regulations and closure zones, this project will create unified signage, print resources, and digital content to make it easier for everyone to ride responsibly.

By providing these shared tools, we’ll help strengthen club-led education efforts and promote a cohesive, proactive approach to wildlife protection across BC’s snowmobiling community.

Thanks to the ORV Trail Fund and to every rider who registers their snowmobile - these projects will help us build a safer, smarter, and more sustainable future for snowmobiling in BC
