Renshaw Unlikely This Season, But New Riding Area Awaits McBride Snowmobilers!

The BC Snowmobile Federation (BCSF) is actively collaborating with the McBride Big Country Snowmobile Association to address the unforeseen challenges arising from the closure of the Renshaw area. We’re excited to share this important update.

As highlighted in our February 20, 2024, news release, a critical bridge providing access to the Renshaw snowmobiling zone received a “zero rating” from the Ministry in late January, declaring it structurally unsafe. This designation has prevented trail maintenance equipment from using the bridge, limiting access to the popular backcountry terrain. Unfortunately, due to the bridge's substantial span of approximately 120 ft and its critical center pier, there are no viable detour options available, leading to the ongoing closure of the area.

The Renshaw closure had a significant impact on recreational snowmobiling in the region last season, raising serious economic concerns for the Village of McBride. Following the closure on January 22, 2024, snowmobile traffic plummeted, resulting in a staggering 70% decrease in visitor numbers, which severely affected local businesses reliant on snowmobiling tourism.

In response to these challenges, the BCSF, the McBride Snowmobile Association, and Recreation Sites and Trails BC have been working closely together to mitigate the impact and ensure that snowmobiling remains a vital part of McBride’s economy this season. While repairs to the bridge will not be completed in time for the 2024-2025 winter season, we are pleased to announce that the Ministry has approved access to an alternative riding area—Tommy Creek—located just one ridge south of Renshaw. This expansive zone presents exciting new opportunities for riders, and efforts are currently underway to secure access and grooming for the upcoming winter season. At the same time, we remain committed to resolving the access issues into the Renshaw area, working diligently with stakeholders to explore potential solutions.

With this proactive approach, the McBride Big Country Snowmobile Association is eager to welcome visitors back this season, ensuring they are ‘open for business’ and prepared to provide unforgettable snowmobiling experiences for residents and tourists alike. Riders can purchase their club memberships and read more about the Tommy Creek zone HERE.
